AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. 1 History of Autodesk AutoCAD
AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 by Autodesk as a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. It offered basic CAD drafting functions, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional models, dimensions, functions, and calculations, in a windowed format.
An original release of AutoCAD included the drawing window, the viewport, dimension tools, a drafting table, a tooltip help system, and the drawing area (also known as the drafting area). It also included several optional features, such as work space management, the Autodesk’s command window, and the option to store drawings in XDn or XDMn (or Dn or Dm) files. Most of the optional features were subsequently made a part of the drawing window. A subsequent release of AutoCAD added a database system called Scalable Graphic Environment (SGE) to the CAD model.
AutoCAD 3.0, released in 1985, was a notable improvement over the earlier releases. It introduced a new, advanced user interface (UI), including the drawing window, the command window, the zoom tool, a 3-D drawing environment, a newly-designed rasterization engine, and an entirely new dimensioning system. Customizing the command line interface
The command line interface (CLI) is used for a few different activities.
The command line is used by the AutoCAD application to control the processes it performs. This is done through the execution of a series of commands. A user can enter these commands from the command line, or write a program to automate this task.
There are two main ways to do this:
Modify the AutoCAD application to receive the commands directly from the command line.
Write a program that takes the commands from the command line and performs the required actions.
