Conventional fuel injection control systems terminate fuel injection in response to engine speed and engine load, in response to the application of a brake, and during active braking. An example of a conventional fuel injection control system is described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,425,798. It is also well known that engine wear and engine durability may be improved by retarding engine fuel injection under certain conditions, for example, at engine idle and during engine idling. This type of engine operation is commonly referred to as “capping”. Capping the fuel injection in such a manner is desirable to reduce excessive engine wear. It is also known to cap engine fuel injection for periods following an active brake application. An example of a conventional engine fuel injection control system for capping fuel injection is described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,502,813. It is also known in prior art engine operation control systems to combine the ability to initiate and terminate engine fuel injection and the ability to cause engine fuel injection to occur during engine idle, idle retarding, and engine braking. An example of such an operation control system is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,644,838. In this type of engine operation control system, engine fuel injection is initiated and terminated in response to the application of an engine load condition and in response to the application of a brake. During engine idle and active braking operation, engine fuel injection continues in response to engine operating conditions and engine fuel injection is capping in response to engine operating conditions. While prior art operation control systems and systems combining the initiation, termination, and capping of engine fuel injection have produced satisfactory results, they have not been capable of operating as efficiently as desired.
