Kojak was the first in a series of albums which delivered a heavy dose of progressive metal, and The Procession Of The Solar Temple was the first in a series of albums which delivered a heavy dose of free jazz. From 1972 to 1982 we got well over 40 releases from King Crimson, and in that time they released material of a variety of styles and approaches, some of which were mis-interpreted. As it turns out, The Procession of the Solar Temple was a nice idea that was poorly executed, and so when King Crimson eventually got around to releasing the albums that were recorded during that period, they did so in the heaviest of fashions. But that’s a whole other story. This month, let’s start with the very first album released by King Crimson, sort of. I’m not going to call it a proper debut album, or even a full album (the whole thing only clocks in at 35 minutes). Instead, it’s a double album of experimental jazz. The first side was recorded in 1970 with John Coltrane and the second side was recorded in 1972 with Sun Ra. That first King Crimson album was only released in the US (and the UK) and was called Genesis III. The first side, titled, oddly enough, “Decree,” is a very weird and abstract blend of ethnic folk songs and classical music. The second side, “Edipus,” is an extended ritual piece for instruments with a strong emphasis on the spoken word.
