Group Policy Drives Options is an incredibly useful tool developed by David Macauley to help System Administrators and Network Administrators extend the ‘Hide / Disable Drives’ options of the standard Windows Group Policy Console to include drive letters and combinations that do not exist by default.
Anyone who has worked in an environment where Network Administrators are ‘reluctant’ to remove / hide drives by default knows what I mean.
These drives usually take up valuable space on the server’s disk, which is why they usually remain visible. The solution for this is, of course, to remove / hide the drives, which at best requires a reboot, and at worst will cause problems for an end-user.
By using Group Policy Drives Options, System Administrators and Network Administrators can extend the ‘Hide / Disable Drives’ options of the standard Windows Group Policy Console to include drive letters and combinations that do not exist by default.
This extends the Group Policy environment, making it much easier for you to manage your group of users and their computers by removing / hiding drives that users do not need.
Simply add the drive letter or drive letter combinations that you want to hide / disable by using the dropdown box at the top left of the Group Policy Console.
You can select any drive letter or drive letter combination that you want, or simply create a new drive and add it to the list.
Then click ‘Add’ to save your settings to your Group Policy server.
You can then edit the settings, remove any that you no longer need, or change the settings if you want to.
Once you have saved your settings, you can view the settings of any group of users on any of their computers by looking at the following path:
Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Scripts > Hide Drives
You can remove or hide any drive letter or drive letter combination you want in the same way.
A note about removing drive letters
Removing drive letters may be a good idea if the drive letters are linked to particular users or applications on your computer. However, if you are simply wanting to improve your daily Group Policy work then simply hide drive letters that do not need to be visible.
What is ‘not’ a drive letter
You may notice that a particular drive letter is not listed on the dropdown box, this is because that drive letter was never mapped to a drive on the computer in question.
