Hematite’s long-lasting streaks and easy-to-apply color can be used by itself, over painted acrylics or, if mixed with the right color, under acrylics.

Hematite’s natural hue and lack of lightfastness are ideal for applications such as decals, paintings and glazing, and are popular among artists and others who work with mixed media.

Artists use Hematite for its color and ease of application, especially on canvas, wood and other surfaces that are prone to scratching.

Gravure is an ancient process dating back to the 1400s. The technique has been rediscovered, refined and used by many artists to achieve unique results. A piece of Gravure-printed paper was selected for this project, cut into 18″ x 24″ pieces and signed by the artist using masking tape.

A black acrylic was then painted over the paper. I used a mister to apply my acrylics, and this technique proved to be extremely easy. The artist can manipulate the paper into the desired image, and the acrylics remain in place, retaining the image in its original form.

Here are some of the finished images. Notice the beautiful depth and richness of each image.

This print was done with Carbon Print Film. The artist cut out the image and pasted it to a sheet of Carbon Print Film. The Carbon Print Film was then burned in a pan. Each image was burned to a different depth, so the image could be seen through the Carbon Print Film.

After the Carbon Print Film is burned, it is peeled off the paper backing and transferred to a canvas. The Carbon Print Film shows through, but remains in place. The canvas is then trimmed and ready to be framed.

In the previous post, I showed how I apply a print using a stencil. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how I transfer the image by using masking tape.
