R. C. H. Clark R. C. H. Clark (Richard Charles Henry Clark) (1900–1976) was a British anthropologist and archaeologist. Education and Career The third son of a Royal Navy captain, Clark studied at Charterhouse School and then Balliol College, Oxford, graduating with a First in History in 1922. At Oxford he was taught archaeology by Professor E. A. Freeman who became, following Clark’s death, his mentor. Clark was presented in 1928 with a Gold Medal at the University of Bordeaux for his first volume of translation of Greek Sophocles. He spent the next five years researching and writing on classical archaeology and by the mid-1930s had completed his translation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, Sophocles’ Antigone, and Euripides’ Hippolytus. During his extensive travels, he also did research on Native American ethnology and archaeology. In 1933-34 Clark spent eighteen months in Egypt working for the Egyptian Department of Antiquities on the Sebennytic expedition, conducted by the British Museum, and in 1935-36 made a year-long expedition to Egypt studying the early work of James Henry Breasted and the excavations by Edouard Naville. In 1934-35 he did archaeological fieldwork in India and in 1936-37 took up the post of Assistant-Director for the École Française d’Extrême-Orient in Seoul. In 1937 he began teaching at the University of Manchester and was appointed the first Professor of Classical Archaeology, a position he held until 1953. He also carried out two months of archaeological excavations at the site of Warka in Northern Iraq. In 1940 he wrote The Aryan Invasion of India. Between 1939 and 1970 Clark lectured in the British West Indies, particularly Jamaica. He also worked as a political agent in Africa and taught for short periods in the United States. In 1958 he married Margaret Graham, with whom he had three children, David, Richard and Sarah. He retired in 1961. In 1972 Clark returned to Oxford with his daughter Sarah, now aged 33, where he died in August 1976. Recognition The R. C. H. Clark Foundation was founded in 1965 by the University of Manchester, the Institute of Archaeology, London and the University of Bordeaux to support research into the classical and pre-classical past.

It has gone through several revisions, and is now the latest standard version. CLOS is implemented in practically all implementations of the Common Lisp language, but is not officially part of the standard. Yet, unlike many of the newer parts of the standard, CLOS is ancient, dating from before the Internet was a thing. CLOS is a set of system functions used to define and manipulate objects in Common Lisp programs. Such objects are usually called classes or instances. CLOS includes methods that are associated with the class, but also includes special methods and functions related to creation and persistence of objects. It also includes features to facilitate multiple inheritance, dynamic binding, virtual functions, and other features. CLOS is a set of functions, and thus does not require using any dialect of Lisp. While it was originally defined as a set of functions, CLOS has evolved as an extension to the language, such that it now defines a subset of Common Lisp (a so-called dialect of Common Lisp) and is referred to as a “standardized extension”. However, it is not yet incorporated into the Common Lisp standard. CLOS is often referred to as CLOS “for the eyes of God”, because of the extensive documentation provided by its developers. The CLOS specification was developed by a committee of academics and corporations and used to develop the language. It was initially made available to the public with the first release of the standard in 1992.
